Noodscenario in Champagne

In de Champagne is een noodscenario op tafel gekomen om de negatieve gevolgen van de crisis te bestrijden. In de eerste 4 maanden van dit jaar werden 50 miljoen minder flessen verkocht dan in dezelfde periode van 2019. En in de daarop volgende periode daalde de verkoop nog verder. De eerste faillissementen dreigen al.Wine Searcher meldt:

 

 

‘The grim figures are revealed as Covid-19 decimates returns for Champagne growers and producers, pushing some towards bankruptcy. For a region used to occupying the upper end of wine's status spectrum, these are bewildering times for Champagne. On May 28, the region's Executive Bureau, composed of members of Champagne houses and Champagne growers, held an emergency meeting to further address the Covid-19 crisis. This was the second meeting in the month of May where extraordinary decisions were taken, to compensate for the 70 percent decrease in sales volumes in the months of March and April. In absolute terms, Champagne sold 50 million bottles less in the first four months of 2020 than it did in 2019, despite a very strong start of the year. Jean-Marie Barillère, president of the Union des Maison de Champagne (UMC) and co-president of the Comité Champagne (CIVC), affirmed that fears of the US's 100-percent wine tariff,significantly boosted Champagne sales in Januari.’
