Door het slechte weer, vooral gekenmerkt door regen, is in delen van het Verenigd Koninkrijk de oogst met een derde verminderd. Nog twee of drie van zulke oogsten en de Britse wijnbedrijvigheid staat aan de rand van een faillissement. Producent Nyetimber bottelt dit jaar niets om het kwaliteitsimago van de succesvolle bubbelwijn niet te beschadigen. De Britse collega’s melden verder:
"It was a hard decision - a wine maker gets about 30 chances in a lifetime to make a vintage," said Christian Holthausen, from Nyetimber.
"I'm only aware of a couple other vineyards in the world that have ever done this."
The vineyard said it did not think its decision would damage the reputation of the English wine industry.
"The decision was made on the grounds of quality," he said. "I think it's had a positive impact on English wine - it proves we're serious."
It is generally agreed that the Romans brought vines to the nation in AD 43.
During the Dark Ages vineyards died out, only being revived when Christianity spread to the south and east in the 6th Century.
1066 marked the start of a period of viticulture not matched until the current revival, as William the Conqueror's French abbots and monks planted vines across the country.
Although the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536 has been named as the event that destroyed winemaking in England, it would appear many monasteries had already abandoned it by then.
But a new breed of pioneers changed everything. In 1951 grapes were planted at the first commercial vineyard of modern times at Hambledon, in Hampshire.
